THE SOLOIST, coming to theaters tomorrow, is not a typical Hollywood movie with a predictable
plotline and a pat happy ending. It’s based on the true story of Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez’s chance encounter with a gifted Skid Row musician, Nathaniel Anthony Ayers. The film, starring Academy Award® winner Jamie Foxx (as Ayers) and Academy Award® nominee Robert Downey Jr. (as Lopez), examines the issues of homelessness and mental illness, and is a powerful story of friendship and the redeeming power of music.

Both men are outcasts looking for acceptance, purpose and connection. Ayers is a gifted Juilliard-trained string player whose mental illness landed him among the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. Lopez is a reporter who (in the film) is divorced and discouraged about his future. He believes that his efforts will transform Ayers’ life, but it is his own life that is transformed when he crosses the line of a journalist and becomes an advocate for Ayers.

Inspired by Nathaniel’s incredible talent and passion for music, Lopez is drawn into Ayers’ difficult life and ultimately steps outside of his own comfort zone to become Ayers’ friend. Based on Lopez’s book, The Soloist: A Lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship, and the Redemptive Power of Music, this is a real story of heart and friendship that offers hope and a reminder of how much each of us can do to help one another.
