Scion Mix CD v 17 - Vice Records / Flosstradamus

Friday, August 3rd, 2007 | SCION, MUSIC

Established DJs in Chicago prior to their alliance as Flosstradamus, J2K (Josh Young) and Autobot (Curt Cameruci) initially linked up in 2005 and started performing as a duo. With influences rooted in punk and hip-hop, Flosstradamus brought normally divided crowds together through their unique mixes of hip-hop, house, original remixes, and juke. A monthly party soon followed (”Get Outta The Hood”) at Chicago’s Town Hall Pub, and within a year Flosstradamus turned a stagnant bar into the proverbial place-to-be, with lines stretching down the block as sweaty kids crowd surfed and got down inside. National press soon began to take notice, including MTV, the Fader, and an URB cover story. Appearances followed at SXSW, CMJ, the Pitchfork Festival and Pop Montreal; parties for VICE, The Fader, Jane Magazine, DKNY,URB, and Puma; and performances with Clipse, Common and Rick Ross. This year brings a full length Flosstradmus LP, a mixtape with up and coming rappers The Cool Kids, and a European tour with A-Track and Kid Sister.

Merry Karnowsky Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by James Marshall, formerly known as Dalek. Born in 1968, the Brooklyn-based painter has made a reputation with a distinctive and innovative style, unlike any other Pop-Inspired painter working today. Stylistically synthesizing the American traditions of still animation and cartoons, his remarkably complex compositions resemble a direct lineage to the expressive Japanese Superflat movement, and the zany everyday apparitions found in nature.

Marshall logically constructs narratives in all-over relationships whose internal visual order creates its own story. More than complex, all-over patterning, Marshall strives to evoke subtle and abstract personal statements, which are often enigmatic. Taking visual cues from both historic and personal origins, these compositions take color and line into undiscovered territory. His paintings on wood panel layer dioptric fragments of an imagined world, against a fractured kaleidoscope of the real world. Slick and unblemished, these hybrid works balance the artist’s pictoral impulses with near mechanical decorum, as they venture into the realm of feeling and lived experience.

In Diseased, Marshall moves away from the austere single figuration of the past, and focuses instead on hyper-filled landscapes that pluralize the macrocosmic. Just as complexity theory uses multi-dynamic spaces as formulas for the realms of the instant, Marshall’s ‘Nuevo-Rococo’ configurations challenge the notions of the interior / exterior, macro / micro, and its conflicts or acquiescence to the world. The simultaneity of such complex imagery, beautifully rendered, creates the power to mesmerize and enchant the viewer

Scion Presents: To The Masses

SCION PRESENTS: TO THE MASSESCurated by Giant Robot

Los Angeles- July 2007 -  Scion and Giant Robot magazine present To The Masses, the latest art show at Scion’s 4,500 square foot Installation L.A. Gallery.  The exhibition incorporates various themes in contemporary art and popular culture that can be found in Giant Robot magazine, stores, and art gallery.

Artists from the U.S. include Caroline Hwang, Ben Woodward, feric, Dan-ah Kim, and Brian Ralph;  from Japan: Eishi Takaoka and Kohei Yamashita;  from Spain: Olaf Ladousse;  from

England: French (yes, that’s his name).  Together this diverse group of artists delves into different mediums (including silk screen printing, carved wood, simple pen-and-ink drawings) and styles.  Yet they share an indie spirit, and are part of an underground cultural movement that spans the globe.  Most can’t boast that they’ve shown in museums or have had a huge career in art thus far, but they have made a range of work and products that stem from their art, such as ladousse’s and zines, Yamashita’s many character-derived products, Ralph’s screen-printed concert posters, and Hwang’s handmade purses.  Not afraid to do the traditionally non-artist “thing” of blending art with products, many of the artists are known across different mediums and by a huge cross-section of people, giving them a wide reach and appealing the masses.” this art exhibition will feature their fine art which, for most of these artist is their primary focus.

Curating this exhibition is the publisher/co-editor and owner, Eric Nakamura who curates most of the 36 exhibitions Giant Robot presents annually in the three cities.

The opening reception takes place August 25th, 7pm – 10pm and will run through September 8th at the Scion Installation LA Gallery,

3521 Helms Ave (at National), Culver City, CA

90232.
